THE HISTORY OF AMERICA'S VICTORY GARDENS

What is a Victory Garden?

The name Victory Gardens harkens back to the world war eras where families and communities were encouraged to grow their own food.

Why Were Victory Gardens Started?

The Victory Gardens of WWI and WWII were established to reduce pressure on the public food supply. These "kitchen gardens" and community gardens were established by families, friends, organizations and neighborhoods to feed themselves and their communities. By 1944 over 20 million Victory Gardens produced 40% of all fruits and vegetables in the USA.
